Minister of Science and Higher Education of Poland

Professor Lena Kolarska-Bobińska graduated from the Department of Sociology at the University of Warsaw. She received the titles of doctor and habilitated doctor of sociology, and in 1993 she became a Professor of the Humanities. Awarded the Ford Scholarship, she studied at Stanford University and at the Carnegie-Mellon University Business School.

From 1991 to 1997 she was the Director of the Public Opinion Research Center. From 1997 to 2009 she worked as the Director of the Institute of Public Affairs. From 2009 to 2013 she was a Member of the European Parliament; where she was a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, the Committee on Regional Development, and the Committee on Petitions.

She served as advisor to the Presidents of the Republic of Poland: Lech Wałęsa from 1992 to 1995 (Economic Committee), and Aleksander Kwaśniewski from 2001 to 2005 (Reflection Group on the Future of the European Union), as well as to the Government Plenipotentiary for accession negotiations to the European Union. From 2003 to 2006 she was a member of the EU Commission’s Advisory Group on Social Sciences and Humanities in the European Research Area.

She is a member of the Committee on Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences .

She was awarded, among others, the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta by the President of Poland; she is also the recipient of the Ordre National du Mérite awarded by the President of the French Republic, and the European Medal awarded by the Committee for European Integration and Business Centre Club.

Professor Lena Kolarska-Bobińska is the author and co-author of over 300 academic works: books, articles, studies, and research reports published both in Poland and abroad.
